OBN: Community News Feature

Here’s the deal.

Sometimes software, plugins, content management systems and so on…don’t play nicely together.

That’s what happened recently when I fell for the upgrade on our Community News Section. The upgraded (and NOT BETTER) Community News Section has not, at all, played nicely with all the other programs that run the entire OBN.

I know a lot of people have been really frustrated by time outs, errors, etc, etc, with probably the most popular feature here on the OBN and short of taking a hammer to my laptop, I haven’t been able to recreate the problem from my side.

BUT — I may have finally figured out the main problem. Our cache system. So for today I’ve turned off the cache system that helps make the OBN run faster so that I can get feedback from all the people who have had problems over the last month.

So if you are one of the people who haven’t been able to submit your latest blog post to the Community News feature, if you could try it today and let me know in the comments below whether it worked or not, I’d really appreciate.

On that note, if you have come to be OBN and it seems like it’s loading really slowing, I’d like to hear your feedback about that as well.

To be honest, it’s a toss up about which program is more important. A cache is really needed when you run a site as big as the OBN. I like to say, the OBN has a big butt and needs a cache raft to help keep it above water. But the Community News is really important as well!!

Anyway, I’d love your feedback and thank you everyone for your patience!!!

Yeah! I could finally post a blog. It worked!

Well….that was the problem: Cache does NOT like the Community News Section.

It’s great news you were finally able to post. Sorta bad news that the solution was to turn off the Cache. Sadly, there is no in between with the two.

I’ll keep the cache off for the rest of the day and see how badly the site slows down. Glad it finally worked though!

  2. 3

I haven’t noticed much of a slow down and in fact can actually log off the forum now. Thanks Rebecca…are you busy enough yet?

  3. 5

Have not experienced any problems from Geezerville, Rebecca! Maybe that is because I haven’t posted in a couple of weeks. Just woke up from my nap. Going to go set in the rockin’ chair on the front porch. Good luck with all this technical crap.

  4. 6

I have posted a few in the last two weeks and haven’t seen them. Just added another and it just says pending review.

  5. 9

Works for me now, too. And a question… Why is it necessary to include a tag?

    • 10

I’m trying to find the exact coding to remove that tag requirement. It was a new ‘benefit’ with the upgraded software. I’m of the opinion that it’s redundant and unnecessary. I’ll get rid of it one way or another ( so help me big G )

  6. 12

Seems to work fine for me as well.

  7. 13

I was able to post on the community news section this time without any trouble. It was giving me a timeout error before. I haven’t noticed the website loading any slower than normal, everything seems to be working fine for me.

  8. 14

Thanks Mike and Joseph for your feedback.

Ok everyone, it looks like it’s official.

I’ll leave the cache off and see how things go for awhile.

  9. 15

Wasn’t able to post in Community news last night. Got a timeout message and something about only entering alpha -something.

  10. 16

I could not get it to work… but this happens frequently. Usually, I just try it again later and it goes. I’ll let you know.

  11. 17

Like now, for instance. :-) It worked!

  12. 18

Fantastic! Thanks for all the work. Before it took me five to six attempts to post to the news section. Your work is appreciated!

  13. 19

spoke to soon. The problems continue. Tried four times to post to the news but no luck. no timeout msg just says loading then nothing happens. Back to the drawing board I guess. Thanks anyway for effort and keep that hammer in the tool box :-)

  14. 20

    Hammer to Program!

I just tried it and timed out. First time that’s happened for me.

Sorry everyone. Back to the drawing board. So frustrating.

  15. 21

Tried again today and no luck. Will wait for you guys. Cheers!

  16. 22

I Received this message: ERROR: Timout occured, please resubmit.

  17. 23

My posts are coming through fine from IE, but when I try to post from Firefox there is nothing. Could be partially to do with the recent Java update, too. We have noticed it on a few websites.

  18. 24

Still getting the time out error today….Thanks Rebecca for for all of the hard work on this vexing issue!
