Quick Fire Outdoor Interview: Windknots & Tangled Lines

Windknots & Tangled Lines

1) Outdoor Activity of choice?   Hide and seek is my first choice, but I can’t get many adults to play without forgetting to come find me.

2) Outdoor Mornings. Up at 5 a.m.? 6…7…8…9…Or when the sun heats up the tent and you can’t take it anymore? I’m not a cold weather fisherman, so early isn’t too bad in the summer.  I’m usually up at around 6, eat a leisurely breakfast and then hit the water. I take breaks every few hours because I also love to explore and check the area out.

3) Snicker Bar or Granola Bar on the trail? No contest…snickers (several of them in fact, unless my wife is around).

4) Santa is coming. What outdoor (dream) present should he put under the tree for you this year? I would really like Santa to bring me the eyesight and skills to tie 18 and smaller flies. Short of that, I’d settle for several dozen of my favorite flies free with a trip to Canada thrown in…and April Vokey as my guide unless you’re available.

5) Seven days in the Alaskan Wilderness or Seven days on a Tropical Beach? If my wife is going with I’d take the Alaskan Wilderness.  If she’s not going…well, I guess I’d better not go there. Neither of us care much about tropical but we both want to fish Alaska.

6) What kind of Outdoor Store would you own? I have a great idea for a bar/fly tying parlor. I think it would be a great hit.

7) Fill in the blank. When I head outdoors I need to have —toilet paper— with me. No question. I’ve forgotten change of clothes, reels, rods, flies, even food. You don’t want to forget the t-p!

8 ) Biggest Outdoor Pet Peeve? People who are inconsiderate of others. We’ve all got an obligation there. Don’t blast the stereo at midnight, don’t walk through someone’s run they’re fishing, don’t drink the last beer, don’t take the last of the toilet paper. Courtesy is important.

9) What’s the worst injury you ever got in the outdoor? I got my feelings hurt really bad once. Seriously. I’ve been lucky and never gotten hurt really bad outdoors. A few years ago I was jumping boulders on my way to the water and stepped on a round rock about the size of a softball. Unfortunately it was sitting on top of a rounded boulder. I took what could have been a nasty spill. I tore my new Simms Guide waders and my knee swelled 3 times normal size. I was able to stay fishing because the water was so cold it kept the pain and swelling down.

10) Finish this sentence: When I was a little kid, I loved to go outside and… sleep in a tent. I loved camping, even if it was just in the backyard.

Courage Test:  It’s You and a Grizzly Bear face to face on the trail. Knowing yourself, will you 1) Hold your ground and see who blinks first 2) throw your gear at the Grizzly and run for your life 3) faint on the spot or 4) Describe your escape plan…

Lack of sense runs rampant in my family. Being in law enforcement sometimes means you do things that common sense and intelligence warn you away from. I’ve done it the wrong way my whole life. I’m staring the bear down and thinking he’s going to back down. My back up plan is to pass out and hope for the best.

There you have it…fire time and I’d say Howard did great! I’m throwing in a bonus picture of Howard I found searching through his blog archives.

I’m not sure, but I don’t think that’s really a photo of Howard. I could be wrong but it looks more like Justin Beiber.

Excellent, Howard! Answer #9 shows some hardcore fishing dedication. I’m with Kirk, I think someone stood in for this interview. April would be lucky to be your guide.

Great responses Howard! Seems to be a TP theme there, I’m not sure, but you can bet that I won’t sneak the last of it. :)

OBN, Really enjoying the quick fire interviews. Keep em coming.

Thanks for the “honor” guys. I did get into a little bit of trouble with my wife over this. She saw the “younger” me and now thinks she got cheated by marrying me when I was old and washed up.

You should definitely make Alaska Howard, and don’t worry about TP, because we have lots of natural wipe like Devils Club leaves and Raindeer Moss. You also seem like a natural leader for travel through tall grass and dense willows along salmon streams, with your charm and handsome visage.

Good interview! And for the record…I will NOT volunteer for that butt paste thing you got going on your blog, Howard.
