Winner (s) of the Montana Fly Company Fly Tying Designer Contest

Back in January we announced the
Montana Fly Company in conjunction with OBN present: A Fly Tying Designer Contest.

The submissions started to roll into my personal mailbox and it took all the will power I could summon to resist opening those packages filled with original Fly Fishing gold.

It wasn’t easy, the temptation and all, but in the end I sent ALL the submission, unmolested by me, off to Montana Fly Company for review  and today we have the pleasure of announcing the Winner (s) of that amazing opportunity.

Drum Roll Please….

The Winner of the MFC design contest is
Trevor McTage Tanner who blogs at Fly-Carpin~ Long Live the Revolution

Trevor McTage Tanner ~ Primordial Crust

Trevor will have his first place fly, the Primordial Crust featured in the Montana Fly Company Catalog of which he will receive royalties off the sales his fly produces.

This is what MFC had to say about his fly:  ”His carp flies were really nice.  We liked how he used Swisher’s Rub-a-Dub in the body and fuzzed it all out.  His flies were all very clean as well.”

Congrats Trevor!

Hold on Trevor, there’s more…if you thought you couldn’t be any more excited about this win and official Fly Designer designation, MFC wanted to put a little extra icing on top of the cake. They are also sending you a hat AND A MFC Madison Reel! Yes, you read that correctly and we’ll all wait until you pick yourself up off the floor.

We are excited for you and offer some hefty pats on the back and impressive high fives. Well done and we hope this news brings a little extra snap to your cast this week.

Now, Montana Fly Company also picked a 2nd and 3rd place fly to give honorary status

Chris Kulow ~ Kebari Fly

Second place goes to Chris Kulow of the blog The North River ~ Fishing through the seasons

Congrats Chris!

This is what MFC had to say about Chris’s fly: “His Kebari flies were tied very well, and the use of the little glass bed in the body was sharp.  I am going to fish  these as soon as I get back to Montana!”

For your second place finish, MFC is sending you one of their Brook Trout Water Bottles and a Hat. Everyone can read about Chris’s Kebari Fly on this post:  Throwing My Hat (And Flies) Into the Ring

Congrats Chris!

Josh Calkins ~ Curtain Climber

And lastly, Josh Calkins of the blog Bigerrfish ~ Fish don’t shrink…they only get bigger has claimed the 3rd place spot with his original fly.

Here’s what MFC had to say about his work: “Josh’s Curtain climber is a good looking streamer.  We can’t quite figure out why it is called the curtain climber, but we are sure it will fish well!”

Congrats Josh!

Josh, for your 3rd place finish MFC is sending you a MFC Waterproof box and a pair of brown trout nippers (and a hat) so well done!

You can read about Josh’s fly here: Curtain Climber Goes to Camp

Winners of 1st, 2nd and 3rd….send us a confirmation email at contact@outdoorbloggernetwork.com letting us know your address and information so we can tie all this together with MFC. You will be contacted!

Now, for Everyone that particpated: Please watch your email for a follow up from Montana Fly Company for participating. There’s a little something special headed your direction too!

Thank you Montana Fly Company for giving all the
Fly Tying Bloggers out there such an amazing opportunity!

If you haven’t already, don’t forget to follow MFC on

so you don’t miss out on any exciting updates

P.S. if you are ever so slightly jealous about Trevor getting a new Madison Reel, you still have until Sunday night to put in for this weeks gear review opportunity which happens to be…a Madison Reel! I also think I’m going to tell RNG to skip comment #8 so that should help everyone’s chances!

Awesome. As a reader of all 3 blogs, it’s cool to see you all get some well deserved recognition. Very impressive designs all around. Personally, I think this is the coolest OBN contest to date, you guys should all be very, VERY proud today.

I want to thank The OBN and The Montana Fly Company again for running such a cool contest. I also want to congratulate Trevor and Josh on oustanding designs. And lastly I want to thank all of the other participants who submitted flies. I saw some really cool designs that I would love to get my hands on. Hopefully some of you may be interested in a few “mini-swaps” in the future.

Just got the news, and yes – I had to pick myself off the floor. I agree with Troutrageous – This has been the coolest promotion for OBN to date and it was really fun prepping for it. OBN and MFC really went all out. They seem to be pretty creative though, and I have no doubt they will trump it at some point.

Congradulations to Chris, Josh and all the other competitors on thier fine work.

I guess there really is no need for me to butter up the RNG this week. MFC has already taken care of it thank you very much!
