This writing prompt was inspired by Funcfish from the blog The Functioning Fishaholics
So I’ll quote the idea Funcfish posted in the forum exactly as he wrote it:
“How bout “Damaged Goods”. Tell us your story about that time you broke your favorite bamboo fly rod, bounced the canoe off of your wife’s car, dinged your favorite reel. If you have broke, damaged, or set on fire a favorite piece of outdoor gear we want to hear your story!”
I’d bet we ALL have a story or two that would fit right in with this writing prompt. Who doesn’t have a story of something catching on fire? Stepping on a prized piece of gear? Backing a truck into a rock pile? Something blowing out of the truck? Camera falling out of a pocket and rolling down a 200 foot embankment?
You know, the unforgettable memories we create in the Great Outdoors…So lets read about your Damaged Goods story. Write it up and come back here and post your link into the ‘linky’ system below so everyone can go see (share in your misery) what happened to your good stuff.

I’m not gonna write a story. But a few years ago during the summer i broke 2 rods in one day at Applegate Lake. The first one was slammed in my car door before i even got to fishing. The second one was after my buddy hooked a nice trout and i was bringing the net over to him and stepped on my other rod. Luckily my friends also bring extra rods or else i would of been done fishing that day lol.
I’m going to have to own up to a lot of damage on wifey’s car for this one… Doghouse here I come!
Gee, WHICH story should I choose???? LOL.
OK…I posted up first…you can all follow now!!! Ha.

Hmmm I tried to use that “Linky Tools” thing but it didn’t seem to take. Is that moderated?
Anyway here is my first story
My Biggest Fishing Train Wrecks

It worked so you are all good and I just read your story…..(holding tight to my cell phone now)
I got another one publishing on 3/18 (about an hour from now)
I actually don’t remember any serious damaged goods on my end for the past few years but maybe “lost” goods will count too.
Many many (really, many!) years ago when I just started getting started with fishing I set up a pole for carp fishing on the shore of a small lake. I cast out, put the pole on the rod holder, turned around and stepped back to my car to get the second pole ready. The weird noise I heard while I was working on my second pole with my back toward the water, I probably will never forget again.
I jumped around and could see my about 6ft pole heading toward the water and saying Goodbye to me before I got a chance to reach it. The shore line was falling really steep at that location and I had no desire to go swimming in the cold water that day.
Now, that small lake (actually more of a bigger pond) was housing some really nice size carps I found out later and who ever has fished for carps will know of the power those fish can develop.
What did that teach me for all the years of me fishing since that day? Setting the right drag on a reel is the very first you do after casting the bait, if not even before.
