Are YOU the next PAID FLY DESIGNER for Montana Fly Co.?? Have you designed an original fly that the fish just can’t resist? Want your flies to be featured alongside the patterns developed by Doug Swisher and Denny Rickards?
Montana Fly Co., in conjunction with the OBN, is looking for their next fly designer. We believe that the best fly tyers are members of the OBN, have their blogs listed on the directory, and so does Montana Fly Co. So, we are offering this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our Fly Tying members to have their creations considered for inclusion in the MFC catalog and become a paid fly designer by receiving royalties on their personally designed flies that are sold.
So – how exactly is this going to work, and what is OBN and MFC looking for in return?
Here we go, the Terms & Conditions, Guidelines and Instructions:
1) You must: Be a registered blogger on the OBN. So, if you are reading this and you are NOT a blogger on OBN – I suggest you submit your blog quickly!
2) Each entrant: Should “like” the Montana Fly Co. Facebook Page and should encourage others to do so. (If you don’t have a facebook account, it will not exclude you from this opportunity) Part of the reason MFC is working with us to do this promotion is to sign up more people for their FB page, to facilitate easier communication about new products and updates.
3) Each entrant: May submit as many flies as they want for consideration, but please hi-grade them as MFC has hundreds of submissions.
4) Blog Post Requirements: Each blogger submitting flies for consideration will be required to write a post on their blog detailing the fly or flies they are submitting. MFC will be reading your post, so give the details, how it came about, what type of fish love it and so on….
- Post will include a link to Montana Fly Company
- Post will include a link to Montana Fly Companies Facebook Page
- Post will include a link to this promotion page on the OBN.
5) Gathering of the Flies: Montana Fly Co. needs to see your fly in person along with the ability to review your submission information on your blog post.
It will be the Fly Tyers responsibility to send their fly(flies) directly to the OBN. We will be collecting the entries (packages) and sending the entire collection to MFC in one huge box. The OBN is simply a facilitator of this opportunity and will not be opening your mailed submission. Your information and flies will remain in the box you send it in until the staff at MFC opens it for review.
Please devise an information sheet to be included with your mailed submission that includes your name, email, phone number and the blog link that talks about the fly you’ve submitted. Please don’t make MFC try to track down the information they need.

*Mailed submission (flies) will not be returned to the original sender after the contest*
6) Selecting The Winner: The decision made on the winning fly will be the responsibility, judging and decision of Montana Fly Co. The winner of this opportunity will become part of the Fly Designer team at MFC and receive royalties on the sales of their flies.
Bonus! A 2nd and 3rd place finisher will be selected among the entries and receive MFC swag. (And they have some REAL cool swag!)
Winners will be personally notified and announced here on the Outdoor Blogger Network, along with other social media sources.
7) Deadline: The cut off date for submission of flies is March 15th. Your package must reach us by that date…so keep a tightline!
— Bonus Possibilities! In addition to the top honor of being named a Fly Designer, Montana Fly Compnay may choose to offer, at their discretion, Pro Staff status to any of the submitting bloggers. Montana Fly Company’s Pro-Staff members test the MFC fly patterns out fly fishing and provide valuable feedback MFC needs to continue to be the best in the industry.
~Remember, this opportunity is exclusive to OBN members, so the playing field in the competitive world of fly tying is narrowed down just for you.
Whether you are a new fly tyer or an old hand at it, all you need is a fly pattern that MFC (and fish) can’t live without. So good luck and may your whip finish hold strong~
We all want to see your fly creations, so please be sure to come back here and leave a comment with your blog URL in it. If you have any questions, ask away in the comment section or email us at : contact@outdoorbloggernetwork.com

I wish I had some custom designs! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. KUDOS to OBN and Montana Fly Company! Good luck everyone who enters!
So what does it mean to be a “Fly Designer” or a “Pro-Staffer?” It isn’t clear to me what will be asked of the winner and what the benefit is.
A paid Fly Designer is one who has a unique fly submitted and accepted by MFC – a “Clif’s Mega Bass Buster Beast”, maybe. They reproduce that fly for commercial sale, list it in their catalog, and you, as the designer , are paid royalties based on the number of flies sold. Sales of Swisher’s Parachute Madame X – PMX – generate royalties for Doug Swisher, for example.
A Pro Staffer for MFC is a fly fisherman – often a Guide – who’s opinion they value, and who may test out various gear from MFC and send them input. There are more Pro Staffers than Designers.
The opportunity to have your flies considered for inclusion in a Designer / Royalty program is certainly rare, and this may be the only opportunity like this to ever come across the web. There may have been others, but I’m not aware of them.
Joe
Thank you Joe, that clears up my confusion and hopefully others.
Now, if I could just remember how I tied that CM3B…I should start writing things down.
Now if you find a company willing to do something like this with lures, I have just the thing. Been prototyped and tested. Killer.
Not sure if it will translate into a fly. Maybe. But I can’t tie it. I can draw it. It might work. Don’t make me start thinking about fly tying.
I’m assuming it can be for any species. Maybe trout would hit this thing. Fish eat the oddest things.
Ken, you need to find a fly tyer and team up with your design ~
What a cool opportunity! If only I could tie flies….
I fly fish…..I can tie a fly on my line…
But I can’t tie a fly on a vise to save my life…
So I second that.
If only I could tie flies….
I think I may have a few flies to send in. Thank you OBN and Montana Fly! Sounds like fun!
wow, what an opportunity. i can’t tie, but i would be willing to test flies.
Ivan, now that’s what I’m good at….testing out flies =)
I don’t want to speak for you, Rebecca, but I really think MFC would value the opinion of people who have no idea how to tie flies.
It is nice to dream.
Nice! Montana fly is my favorite. Might have to get some time in at the vise.
Get on it Zach ~
Good luck to all who enter … I wouldn’t wish my ham-handed flies on anybody! Have fun, and thanks again, Joe and Rebecca, for offering such a great opportunity to members. Y’all are friggin’ awesome!

I second Chris! Friggin’ awesome!
Thank you Chris and Owl ~ We are pretty excited about this opportunity for all the Fly Tyers. I can’t wait to see what they all come up with~
I’m in…steelhead bugs coming
hmmm…no entries yet.
Maybe I would have a chance after all….better get busy.
Sweet. I’m all over this!
I’m all over this! Now I have an excuse to sit at the vise and drink whiskey…..;)

And what if we don’t have a Facebook Account? I leave my phone and computer at home when I fish, I don’t do facebook. Is that really going to disqualify my entry?
Not at all! We’ve had several people email us since they didn’t have a facebook account and we’ve told everyone, it’s ok. Maybe just mention in your entry if someone does use Facebook they could go check out the MFC facebook page.
Let us know if you have any other questions and we hope you send in a fly design!

I am working on my final ties right now. Yes it is getting a little tight.
